Winter is Coming (and so is Fall) Well summer is in full swing now and everyone is hopefully enjoying a nice break from school work.  However fall is on the horizon and that means new subjects and new challenges as well. A new school year approaches. One of the things that really helped my kids was getting a tutor part way through the summer break to brush up on some of their problem areas, especially mathematics and science.   These topics always seemed to be troubled spots for my children. I guess that means they actually do take after me. My younger daughter had ADHD and some Visual Perceptual challenges, so a summer tutor really made a big difference in her education- especially a special education tutor.  The young lady we hired was very familiar with my daughters problems, including dealing with seeing some words differently than they actually appeared.  There was much coaching done over that summer. I had tried to work with my daughter myself, but I had not the training or understanding of what we were dealing with at the time.  Eventually, what happened with us is what happens to a lot of parent child instruction.  It becomes extremely frustrating and stressful. Both parties are not completely sure whats going on and study time becomes and argument. While watching the special education tutor, I learned there are many ways to teach and not all children benefit from the same   methods.  In fact this tutor had some very exciting methods and plans that my child actually began to enjoy working on and feel positive about.  As a parent, I claim amateur status.  But I learned so much from observing the   tutor working with my Daughter.  I would highly recommend summer tutoring to any one. However if your child has a few extra challenges I implore you to , first give them a nice summer break and them get a head start on the school year. Not only will your child be better prepared, they will be emotionally more comfortable in that   agonizing start of a new school year with new subjects, new teachers, and new class mates.  Every child can use a little more confidence, but to my child this was invaluable.

Studying until 3 am won’t help a student perform well on a test because their mind is exhausted by the morning. Rather, pick a reasonable cut off time. Perhaps studying until 8 or 10 pm is reasonable for a student who goes to bed at midnight but an early bird may need to call it quits by 7 pm. Outside of finals week, students should also schedule in me time or down time at around four hours a day. This time might be spent cooking a delicious meal, going for an afternoon run, or having a cup of joe with friends. The specific activity is irrelevant as long as the student isnt thinking about school and assignments during those hours. 4. Ask yourself, can it wait until tomorrow? (and if not, why not?) Many workers and students will think of several last minute things that need to be done right now, and simply cant wait, or at least it feels that way. People who are working until the wee hours of the morning scrambling to get things done usually wake up tired and unprepared to start the next day. Its essential to figure out why these things just cant wait. Did you forget something thats due tomorrow morning? Are you usually running late in the morning hours? Or, is it something that could absolutely wait until the morning but you simply cant relax until its done? A little bit of stress can keep people on their toes and help them stay motivated. However, if non-essential tasks are keeping students up at night, they won’t experience a work-life balance. Try using a checklist to go through earlier in the evening to prevent forgotten tasks or create an electronic secretary to remind you of important things that are due by noon. The truth is, though, no matter how prepared you feel, there will still be certain aspects of college that surprise you once you arrive. I wish I had known more about changing my major, understanding the importance of networking, and recognized the reality about student loans. Arriving at college freshman year, it can be frustrating to stumble upon things you arent prepared for. Have no fearit will get easier. These students often feel confident when starting down this path, but there is no predicting what might happen throughout the four years of your undergraduate career. Perhaps you have dreamed of becoming a medical doctor, and you should certainly entertain that option if you feel a drive to in your heart. Somewhere along the tiring route to medical school, you may be dissuaded by intensive chemistry classes and decide that medicine is not right for you. Although this figure may not seem astronomical, college students should take care to keep their loan debt as low and as manageable as possible. There is only a six-month grace period for most student loans, and it may take six months or longer for college graduates to find employment. It is critical that students be aware of the terms of their loans and whether their loans are subsidized or unsubsidized. With subsidized loans, the federal government pays interest so long as the student is attending college or the loan is in deferment. Unsubsidized loans, by contrast, start accruing interest immediately after the loan is disbursed. The difference between a subsidized and an unsubsidized loan can mean thousands of extra dollars in the long term, so be sure you understand the loan details before you sign any paperwork. Starting college is both a frightful and a stimulating prospect. Consider the advice of seasoned college graduates, but also weigh in your own judgment and experiences as you open this next chapter.
